Peu de séries reposent autant que The OA sur leur imprévisibilité, leur capacité à nous emporter dans un méandre narratif aux frontières du réel, de l’étrange et du mystique. Le drame de Netflix, lancé il y a deux ans presque par surprise, s’est imposé comme un objet fictionnel unique, polymorphe et composite, dont il est difficile de résumer l’intrigue… et impossible de discuter de ce qu’il va devenir, au risque d’annihiler une de ses principales qualités. Ensuite, ces nouveaux épisodes sont plus carrés ils varient moins dans leur durée et partent moins dans toutes les directions – pour simplifier, l’histoire fait des va-et-vient entre la quête de Prairie et celle des ados. Sans renoncer aux principaux enjeux mis en place au terme de la saison 1, ce retour de The OA se structure donc plus fermement entre de très beaux moments intimistes – où les héros à vif partagent leurs peines et leurs angoisses – et des glissements poétiques et baroques – vers un mysticisme humaniste et écolo à l’esthétique souvent ludique. Mais il aura fallu une saison pour que l’impression de ridicule et le premier degré de la série s’estompent, et que même les spectateurs les plus dubitatifs dont nous faisions partie baissent la garde et soient touchés par la sincérité de Marling et Batmanglij. Jusqu’où ira The OA ? Evidemment, on ne peut ni vous le dire pour cette saison 2, ni le prévoir pour la suite. Netflix’s Brand New Cherry Flavor’ is a mind-bending horror that follows Lisa down a drug-induced, dark-magic-infused rabbit hole. Based on the novel of the same name by Todd Grimson, the show’s central character is a budding film director who embarks on an occult revenge scheme when a sleazy Hollywood producer steals her short film. The resulting surreal caper is engrossing, to say the least, and has garnered praise for its unconventional approach and convincing cast. A Nick Antosca and Lenore Zion creation, the show’s opening season ends on a relatively calm note but with clear seeds planted for a potentially explosive follow-up season. So will we get to see more of the show in the future? Here’s everything we know about Brand New Cherry Flavor’ season 2. Brand New Cherry Flavor Season 2 Release Date Brand New Cherry Flavor’ season 1 premiered in its entirety on August 13, 2021, on Netflix. It contains 8 episodes, each with a run time of between 40 and 50 minutes. As far as season 2 is concerned, there have been no official announcements regarding the show’s renewal. Unfortunately, as the show is billed as a limited series, there is a high possibility that one season is all we’re going to get. Of course, there are limited series that are occasionally extended for further seasons. However, so far, there is nothing that points to that being the case with Brand New Cherry Flavor.’ Even wildly popular miniseries like The Queen’s Gambit have not yet seen a renewal, so there are likely many hurdles for the mind-bending horror show to overcome for potential renewal. The story, though seeded with threads that can be picked up and weaved into a compelling plot for future seasons, also closes on a defining note with the central character giving up on her project and returning to her home country. Therefore, there is a certain air of finality in the final episode and a notable absence of a tense cliffhanger that characterizes the season finales of many shows that expect or hope to be renewed. The storyline of the inaugural season of Brand New Cherry Flavor’ also essentially exhausts the story of its source material eponymous book, which again hints at there being only one season of the show. Since Todd Grimson has penned a few other novels, including Stainless A Modern Romance,’ which, like Brand New Cherry Flavor,’ is also based in LA, we could see more adaptations of his work in the future. However, that will likely be under a different title. Taking the aforementioned factors into consideration, Brand New Cherry Flavor’ season 2 is unlikely to get made. Brand New Cherry Flavor Season 2 Cast Who can be in it? The show centers around Lisa Nova Rosa Salazar, who has her short film stolen by Lou Burke Eric Lange. She employs the help of the occult, cat-consuming witch Boro Catherine Keener and kills off Lou’s son Jonathan Daniel Doheny. Lisa’s vengeful lead actress who plucks her own eyeball out is Mary Gray Siena Werber, while the lead zombie seen stalking Lisa in the show’s opening episode and then throughout the story as Boro’s minion is Pierre Mark Acheson. Other supporting characters are Lisa’s friend Code Manny Jacinto and his girlfriend Christine Woods Hannah Levien, Joe Darcy Laurie, Jules Jayson Blair, and Alvin Patrick Fischler. Lisa’s unfortunate flame who gets decapitated is Roy Jeff Ward. In case season 2 does get made, most of these actors, except for Ward and Keener’s characters Roy and Boro, will likely reprise their roles. There is also a chance that the creators might rope in a brand new cast in the potential season 2. Brand New Cherry Flavor Season 2 Plot What can it be About? Season 1 follows Lisa as she delves into an occult, drug-induced revenge plot against the wealthy Hollywood producer Lou Burke who steals her short film. In a bid to regain the rights to direct her film, Lisa and her occult accomplice Boro manage to bring chaos into Lou’s life, but the budding director soon finds her own life disturbed by strange occurrences. When she tries to break things off with Boro, it is revealed that the ancient occult being is using Lisa for her own ends and plans on inhabiting her body. The first season of Brand New Cherry Flavor’ ends with Lisa’s loyal friend, along with many others, dying and Boro jumping into the body of Mary, the actress who plays the lead role in Lisa’s short film. In the final moments, Lisa herself discards her project despite the arrival of a new producer, who is intent on helping her. Instead, she leaves LA and returns to her home in Brazil. In a potential season 2, we could see Lisa come to terms with the power of the White Jaguar, which she is hinted to be channeling. Furthermore, she could possibly find out more about her mysterious mother, who appears as a faceless entity in the first season. We could also see Boro, in her new body, embark on another scheme for power and chaos. An entertaining offshoot would be the ancient witch and the vengeful Lou now blind, joining forces to hunt down Lisa together. A few days after enlisting enigmatic witch Boro Catherine Keener to put a curse on a director who’s wronged her, young filmmaker Lisa Nova Rosa Salazar is sick of throwing up slimy, mewling kittens as a consequence. “No!” she practically growls, staring Boro down. “No more throwing up kittens!” Boro shrugs, less than bothered. “Fine, no more throwing up kittens,” she says as she steps back into the shadows, disappearing into the lush jungle that’s overtaken her Los Angeles home. Lisa’s temporarily mollified — until she experiences the bodily result of that request, which is, to say the least, far worse than any of her previous retching. Resigned, she sighs. “Tell her I’ll go back to puking,” Lisa says to Boro’s stupefied lackey Mark Acheson, who can only grunt in response as he shuffles away. This sequence of events is only unusual in the world of “Brand New Cherry Flavor” insomuch as it demonstrates something akin to a sense of humor about its gross-out surrealism. Otherwise, the limited series is moreso impressed with its own daring to Go There, or to be as disgusting as the freedom of a streaming service will grant it. A dark and twisty series that delights in getting truly gross, Netflix’s newest tells a scattered tale of vengeance and ownership that’s lucky to have a stellar performance at its center. “Brand New Cherry Flavor” — adapted by “Channel Zero” producers Nick Antosca and Lenore Zion from the novel by Todd Grimson — feels like an Stine book come to visceral life, if Stine’s “Goosebumps” series were rebooted for the adult David Lynch devotees his imaginative kid audience eventually became. The series takes place in a neon-tinged, pulpy version of early ’90s Los Angeles that owes more than a little to horror B movies and paperback books that historically have existed in media’s margins. To this long avowed horror wimp, though, the show isn’t particularly frightening so much as unsettling though I wouldn’t recommend that anyone follow in my footsteps by trying to eat lunch while watching it — a huge, if obvious, mistake. Lisa’s thirst for revenge is aimed squarely at Lou Burke Eric Lange, a predatory horror director who takes advantage of Lisa in order to steal her short film for his own material gain. Lisa, focused and furious, quickly takes up Boro’s offer to destroy his life without fully realizing how that choice might affect hers, too. Keener is clearly having fun embodying the malevolent spark that is Boro, but it’s the reluctantly symbiotic relationship between Lisa and Lou drives much of the show, and both actors quickly lock into that particular dynamic to the show’s benefit. Other actors such as Manny Jacinto and Jeff Ward do their best in supporting roles, but few are fleshed out beyond the core trio of Keener, Lange and Salazar. Salazar is the show’s clear star, making it plain why experimental shows and films like “Undone” and “Alita Battle Angel” have depended upon her magnetic performances to keep them somewhat grounded. Even when the series loses track of who Lisa is as a character, Salazar rarely does. No matter how hyperbolic a scene gets, she imbues every one of them with vivid emotion that almost — almost — grounds the show’s self-consciously weird reality. Any time “Brand New Cherry Flavor” gets specific about Lisa’s pain, it comes close to working. Too often, it loses her personality and motivation to Boro’s jungle, Lou’s ego, or the omnipresent viscera of her own blood and guts betraying her along the way. For those curious about getting lost right alongside her, perhaps proceed with a bit more caution than Lisa on her rapid descent into a hell of her own making. “Brand New Cherry Flavor” premieres Friday, Aug. 13, on Netflix.
